September 11, 2001 started out like any other day. I got up and drove to work. I worked in a shelter. At 9am I started our normal house meeting. I outlined the day and dealt with issues. Then I sent the women out on their normal routines. I did a few things in my office at the shelter and then I decided to go to the agency office for a few things.
I stood at the elevator waiting. Another person, also waiting, started to talk.
Her: Can you believe we were attached?
Me: What?
Her: The terrorist attack.
Me: Oh. Where? (Because I knew it was overseas. I mean, we were Americans. We are untouchable.)
Her: In New York.
Me: What?
Her: They flew the planes into the buildings in NYC.
I got to the office as the rest of the staff was pulling out the TV and turning it on. As I watched the buildings fall my world changed. We were not untouchable.
And this week as people began talking about it...on the radio and the TV...Ladybug began asking questions. And I realized that this had not happened in her lifetime. She would not remember this day. And I am not sure I am ready to explain it all to her --- as we prepare for a plane trip in a month.
