For the last 4 years I have been knocking on the IRS door as soon as tax time came around. You see I adopted in 2006. And my tax liability sucks so each year I got to claim a portion of the tax credit. I wanted my money. So I would complete all the forms and wait for my refund. This is year 5. The tax credit could be extended out for 5 years until it was all used up. This year was my last.
But then the IRS and to up and change things. The adoption tax credit has changed to an adoption tax refund. I know several nice families who are getting very nice refunds because of this change. Without the change they wouldn't have that refund. So I am glad that they made the change. For them.
But changing from a credit to a refund changed a few other things. I now need to provide proof of my adoption. Proof. He adoption decree (in Amharic and English). Her visa. Her re-adoption decree. Okay, I have all them. And I even remembered where they were. But now I am required to provide proof of my carry over. My original credit was about for about $10,000. I used some in 2006 and then carried the remaining over to 2007. Rinse and repeat until you get to 2010. They have just trusted my carryforward amount. I say this is what I have. No questions asked. But with the refund I am not required to prove my carryforward. I am now required to recreate the carryforward worksheets from 2006-2009. Because I didn't keep them. I just made a note in my taxes. My carryforward for this year -- the last bit of adoption tax credit I have -- is $542. I am doing a ton of work for $542 of a tax credit.
And yes, I am aware that it is April 12th.

Hey- I'm no tax expert here but we just got our final adoption credit/now refund amount this year and all we included was a photocopy of the re-adoption paperwork. It definitely worked because our check came last week.
ReplyDelete(Yes, I say "check". Because we had to paper file, the IRS procesor mis-entered our direct-deposit account info so our automatic deposit was declined and it took 6 weeks for a paper check to come our way. grrr... But well worth it!) Good luck!
Oh I like that! I will be trying to recreate this paperwork tonight but one way or another the suckers are being mailed tomorrow. I am done. I am paper filing. But really they want to fight over $542 when some people are getting $54,000 refund (saw that in the paper) because of the adoption refund? I need the money but I am not going to fight for it.
