Patience

Apparently I need to work on my patience. Especially with Ladybug.

The other day I drove up to her daycare to drop her off for the day. I am not a morning person. I barely notice things. And unless it is prepared the night before or it is routine, there is little hope that anything will get done. And now that I have given up all caffeine -- the diet -- there is little chance of me coherent in the mornings. Make you feel good knowing that I could possibly be driving on a road near you?

Anyway, I drove up to the daycare and parked. I noticed a woman standing next to her car with the back door open. I noticed her because she was wearing really really high heels. If my heels are over an inch I can promise that my feet will be aching by the time I get out to the car. What kind of job can you possibly work at that it is appropriate to wear such high heels? Okay, the secretary at my office wears them too but ... well she is a different story.

So I get out of the car and get Ladybug out. We enter the code to the door lock and go inside. I walk her to her class and sign her in. I chat with her teacher for a few minutes. I love her teacher. She gets Ladybug and yet adores her at the same time. And then I realize that I have forgotten Ladybug's milk in the car (she is lactose intolerant so I bring special milk for her to the school). I told you that I can't remember anything in the mornings unless it is routine. So I head out to the car to get the milk. This woman is still standing by the car with the back door open. I can now see that her son is in the back seat doing something. Not sure what. I grab the milk and head back inside. I find the cook and give her the milk. We then get into a short conversation because she is curious as to what I might be doing to Ladybug's hair for graduation. I have to come up with a hairdo that will fit under the graduation cap.

But alas, work is waiting for me so I start to walk out the door of the daycare center. The woman has closed her door and is now walking into the daycare center with her son. I went into the building twice. I had 2 conversations. And she stood at the car door waiting for her son. I would have freaked. I would have been dragging Ladybug out of the car. I would have walked into the daycare without her (she knows the code). I need to work on my patience because that woman must be a saint.

Hair Chronicle

Ladybug has been home for almost 4 years now. I can't even fathom how incredibly niave I was before she came home. I remember saying that I hoped she had loose curls because I had no real idea how to deal with really curly hair. I had had enough exposure to African hair to know that it was not the same as mine. I love my hair -- but one of the things I love most about it was that it takes me about 5 seconds every morning to deal with it. I had NOOOOOOOO idea just how much care her hair would take. Ignorance is bliss -- I guess.
Right before Ladybug came home her head was shaved. So for about 9 months I would comb, spray, and throw a head band on it. The head band would be off by the time I picked her up but she looked good when she went to school. But eventually it became obvious to me that it was time to learn how to do hair.

Above is one of my first attempts at doing something with her hair. So many mistakes.... Notice the big scrunchies. I didn't want to use rubber bands because I know what they do to my hair. But obviously it didn't look right. And on top of that, I had not yet learned that parting is one of the most important things in any hairstyle. I didn't even try.

In the picture above I had learned the importance of parting! I didn't quite have the skills at doing it yet but at least I was trying. And I tried much smaller hair ties.

In the picture above I got brave enough to start being creative. This is a veil - little ponytails that are split and pulled back to the next ponytail. As you can see, once I got to the back row I didn't know what to do with the last ponytail so I just let them stick up. Her hair was also at a stage that when I combed it out I could twist it around my finger and it would form a ringlet that would just stay.

In the picture above I found my new favorite part pattern. It looked so cool from above. But as you can see, I still wasn't very good at finding the center of her head.

By this time I did the picture above, her hair was beginning to get to long to do the coil puffs. If you could see the photo from the front you would see that she looked a little like Medusa. The problem with this is that even though we live in a diverse area, we stick out. White woman, African child. And I was beginning to get looks that said, "She needs to learn how to do hair." And I agreed.

So in the photo above you can see my first attempt at cornrows. I had decided that I needed to keep Ladybug's hair short or I needed to learn to braid. Luckily I had a local friend who was also the adoptive mom of a girl of African descent. I spent the afternoon with her one day and she showed me technique. Seeing and doing are to different things. I kept looking at this and thinking, "My poor girl!"

So as you can see from above, I went back to my coil puffs. But I tried coiling the back this time instead of leaving it in the afro style.

But eventually I decided that I needed to give braiding another chance. In the photo above I not only managed to do decent cornrows (I followed her around for hours with the camera taking picture after picture since I was so proud of myself) but I finally managed to get beads on too. What I didn't realize is that it was also the beginning of Ladybug's love affair with beads.

I loved loved loved this hairstyle. All of a sudden the idea of cornrowing just clicked with me. All of a sudden I knew I could do it. And did it. The tricky thing though was cornrowing up the back of the head. I could not figure out (and still haven't) how to do it without standing on my head. Okay, not really (mostly because I am not capable of standing on my head) but I literally have to lean over her from the front and braid up the head. So even though I love this style, my back can't take me doing it very often.

And then I discovered box braids. Part out small boxes of hair and braid. Regular braids. Not tricky at all. And this was also the start of getting creative with beads. I spent many trips to the local black beauty supply shops (which are all run by Asians, curiously) buying many many beads. Colors. Shapes. Material. I kept buying.

Oh and more box braid with bead fun. Mixing colors. And her hair was at a perfect length. As the braids hung down they framed her face. And the beads did not get in her face. I also appreciated the length because it meant each braid took only a few minutes to do. Since Ladybug has tolerated only 1 hair cut since coming home her hair is getting really long. She started enjoying hair time because it meant it was movie time for me. It was around this time that I starting looking up from her hair as I braided and actually got to see the scenes of The Lion King instead of just hearing it.

The style above had intended to be an easy style. Three asymmetrical puffs that were later braided. Who knew that these braids would take so much time to complete??

I loved the style above. It was still the same box braids as described above but I love loved loved the bead design in this. And my relatives began to appreciate the beads too. They became the cow bell of Ladybug. The clickity-click allowed them to know she was coming so if they wanted to run and hide they could. The problem that I discovered at this point is that all those wonderful cheap beads is that they break as the hit against each other. I began to find beads everywhere. There was easily 100 braids on her head with 9 beads on each braid.

More bead design - and learning to put the box braids up so that one style could look different every day. This was also about the time I started getting feedback from some of the parents in her school saying that lots of beads was ghetto and that I should not put so many in her head. I looked around and realized that not many kids wore beads. But it didn't matter. She loved them. And she wanted them. So I continued.

Then one day I woke up and decided that I would do the mohawk. Was I insane? I was so completely proud of myself when it was done. Just look at it!

And then I cheated by just changing out the beads and leaving the braids. Made it look like an entirely new style without a fraction of the work. Keep in mind that this style easily took me about 6 hours to complete -- over a weekend. With that kind of time investment I was keeping it for a while.

The box braids started to become my "go to" style. Easy. Time consuming. Lasts forever -- they can easily stay in about 4 weeks. But each time I do it I forget that it takes just as long got take them out as to put them in. I hate taking out a style. All my hard work getting destroyed.

Since the box braids were a lot of work I decided to return to doing more cornrows. They don't last as long but they don't take as much time to put in or take out as all those box braids. And I began to really like one color of beads. Unfortunately Ladybug disagreed with me.

Oh, the rare puff picture. I love puffs. So easy -- and she has lovely curls. But Ladybug hates puffs. She pretty much refuses to allow me to do them (can you tell who runs this house?). And now her hair is so long that puffs are beginning to look silly.

The above photo does not really show the twists, but this was when I finally learned to do a tight twist. And bonus - they are quick to put in and quick to take out.

Nothing new here but I just love this photo since I managed to match her bead pattern to the waves.

Ladybug fell in love with this style. Cornrows down the back and cornrows sweeping over the top of her head. Simple. Fast. Keeps most of if out of her face. She keeps asking me to do it again. And it might need to be on my "to do" list soon.

More sweeping cornrows. And I finally found her beloved purple beads!

Please note is the photo above that I manage to find yellow beads to match the new Tae Kwon Do belt she was testing for. And she earned it.

And another more mature (and my skills have improved) version of the veil style. This hairdo wasn't completed but I could not find a good photo of it. The back of the hair was finished by doing hanging twists and pulling them all into a ponytail. So cute!

This one turned out a mess. It looked so good -- in my imagination. It was simple box braids that I then gathered into 2 french braids. I think it would have worked better without beads. Hmmm!! Maybe I should try it without beads? Quick! Someone talk me out of planning another micro box braid do.

Some days I cheat. Massive box braids. And not even any beads. But you pay for it in the long run. This style will only last 3 or 4 days. I like the styles that last longer.

This is the style Ladybug is currently sporting. I stole it from a wonderful video online. I figured I could do it. It is just cornrows. A double halo around her head. Much drama over the weekend trying to get these end. She had no tolerance for experimenting. I did eventually split out the ponytail into individual braids. It is cute but not very good.

What ladybug doesn't know is that at the moment I am planning on straightening her hair next week. Don't yell!! I will just be using a flat iron. I have let her know that I had to be 18 before I was allowed to get my first perm and she must too. She loves straight hair so I thought I would give her a chance to experience it.

If you have any inspirational designs please feel free to share them with me.

Visual Progress

When I started this diet I had the fore sight to take a picture of myself. I was determined to make this diet work. And I wanted the opportunity to post the "before" picture next to the "after" picture so that I could be proud of myself. And I wanted a reminder of what not to return to.

Here is the before picture. Taken on April 20th at 293.8 pounds.

Yes, I know my head is missing. Oh there is a lot of work to do on this body! (Now think back to yesterday when I said I saw several women my size in bikinis yesterday).

Since today in June 1st I decided to comment on my progress. As of today I am 273.8 pounds. Officially down 20 pounds (I had hoped to be in the 260's by today but I have stalled -- ice cream will do that to me). And happy about it. And here is the picture from this morning -- and I even had the fore sight to wear the same clothes.

Notice the difference?

Yeah, me neither. But the scale is going down. And I did change the batteries to make sure that the numbers are real.

I have decided to diet for the entire month of June. Drop as much as possible. And then take a break from it for July and summer vacation.

It turns out that Ladybug might be a fairly decent photographer -- don't you think? Speaking of which, more pics tomorrow -- this time of my Ladybug.

Views of the day

Some of the things I saw today...

Several (yes more then 1) women at the pool who are roughly my size in bikinis. When I post pictures of my weight loss tomorrow night you will have idea why this is eventful. I am glad that they have self confidence...I just didn't need to see it.

One woman swimming in a bikini bottom and a white undershirt tank top -- without anything on under it.

The fire spreading through the pine straw and up the pine trees next to the dumpster after someone dumped the burning charcoals on the pine straw.

The drug deal in the laundromat -- well attempted drug deal. Apparently the drug dealer forgot to leave the stuff in the agreed upon place.

The parents who walked out of the pool area and left their 6, 8, and 9 year olds at the pool. I left the pool about 2 hours later and the kids were still there -- no parents.

I am not sure my child will ever have any unsupervised time before she graduates from high school.

My house

In January I did research. I spent hours on the internet. I spent hours writing emails. I spent hours printing and organizing a notebook. I found houses my mom could buy. I found houses I hoped I could buy.

In February, I traveled to this town with my mom to do the actual house hunting. We saw about 30 houses in 2 days. Sometimes it was easy to say no -- like the kitchen that was missing a wall or a floor that was painted in a psychedelic pattern. Sometimes if was harder. Nice house, nice basement, nice woodwork but not near enough room. Sometimes it was even harder -- everything looked perfect but the attic turned out to not be insulated or the heating system was not up to code. And who would have thought that walking around houses was exhausting? Besides Ladybug.

By the end of the week my mom had put in an offer. She now currently lives in that house and is happy with her choice.

I have been unable to find a job so I can not move there. I can not buy a house. But I found one. It was one I put on my mom's list. It was out of my price range. But I loved it instantly. I couldn't understand how my mom was willing to just pass it up. I want it. And now that 3 months have passed they have dropped the price. And it is now in a price range that I might be able to afford. And it hasn't sold. I just need to find a job first.

I have been paying rent for 20 years. If I were paying a mortgage I would be 10 years away from paying it off. If I am lucky enough to buy a house I love, I promise to retire late so that I can afford it. Can I just need a job that allows me to buy it. Anybody...anybody...bueller???

Just following orders

It was one of those days... okay, it has been one of those weeks. Busy, busy, busy. Not a moment to breathe. Every client wants it...and wants it now! I am working hard to keep up. But Little Boss is not helping things.

I have had to deal with several quips all week from him. I have not bitten. At least not to him. I spent most the week running into a co-workers office for a brief bitch session. I whispered bitch session. Because Little Boss has fabulous hearing. No, I mean it. It is scary and I am beginning to wonder if he has the place bugged. I have stopped bitching about him on IM at work because I am pretty sure he is spying on my computer. I understand that he is legally allowed to do so but... STOP IT! Co-worker is having her own problems with Little Boss. By this afternoon I walked into her office, she looked up at me, and that was all it took. No words necessary.

LB: I am swamped. Why is client coming in today?
Me: ( ...crickets... don't say the wrong thing...)
LB: I mean, what is her rush?
Me: Well, you told her we would have it to her by the end of the week. I made it a priority at your request. It is now Thursday. When I scheduled the appointment she said she couldn't do Friday.
LB: Does she have a job?
Me: Part time.
LB: So she can do Friday. (Not a question)
Me: Well she said she couldn't.
LB: Well I can't do today....
Me: (I look at the calendar. His schedule is tight. But it wasn't when I scheduled it.)
LB: I don't understand her rush.
Me: (me either but he is the one who promised her) What exactly do you want? (is he just bitching or...)
LB: Call her and change it to Friday. But don't make it late in the afternoon. By the way, what have you been working on (in that tone that can only say "Have you been doing anything?")
Me: Cases. (... waving my arms at my desk. It is so piled high with paperwork that it is beginning to get difficult to find a small place to write).
LB: (Just keeps looking at me like he wants more of an explanation)
Me: (Don't say anything. Clinch your teeth. DON'T DO IT!)
LB: (walks out of office)

He signs my paycheck...he signs my paycheck...he signs my paycheck... I really need to be doing a better job a job hunting!

New car!

Yep! Did it. So easy to say... not so easy to do.

I car shopped on Friday. Dropped Ladybug at school and went shopping. Who cares about work? I had done some research on line and knew the 2 dealers I wanted to visit. One was in C-Town -- the town I work in. The other was in R-Town -- just one away. Since I have worked in C-Town for just over 5 years I am familiar with it. I know where the auto mall is. Kind of. I didn't bother to mapquest it. So I turned down the road and found the auto mall. I found Hummer. I found Porsche. I found Audi. I found Land Rover. I even found SmartCar. I went up and down the road. I finally I saw the sign, tucked back behind 3 buildings. How does anybody find it?

I test drove 4 cars, I think. And drooled over a few more. Oh how I would love a Mini. Then I made it to R-Town and test drove another 4 cars. When I bought my first car I had 5 requirements. I wanted a foreign car - preferably a Honda. It could not be red. It needed to be an automatic. It needed to have a functioning radio. And it had to have intermittent wipers. I got a red standard Corolla with no intermittent wipers and the radio broke a week after I bought it. My requirements this time were... let it work without major repairs, 4 doors, power locks, and power windows. And I would prefer a standard.

I came with a realistic list of about 5 options -- including keeping my current car. I called my dad to get his opinion. Not very helpful. All he could tell me was all were good options. Well, I knew that. I woke up at about 6am. On a Saturday!!!!! And sat at my desk for roughly 6 hours before I yelled to Ladybug to get dressed because we were going car shopping. I tried calling my mom -- not available. I tried calling a friend -- not available. I still needed to be talked into it or out of it.

I tried to act cool at the dealership. I tried to act that I didn't yet have a preference. Whatever!! He saw right through me. We started negotiating. This is so new to me. My dad did my negotiating for my first car. I bought my second. And my third was given to me. I stuck to my guns. I insisted on a certain value for my trade in. I asked for money off the price. I asked for a certain interest rate. And eventually I got it all. Calm. Cool. Collected. And then he asked if I was ready to sign on the dotted line. Cold sweat. Heart palpitations. Fear. So glad I remembered deodorant.

Everything signed meant it was time to clean my stuff out of my old car. I was so sure that I was buying a car that I remembered to bring all the keys and all the paperwork for my old car. I was so sure that I was not buying a new car that I did not bother to clean it out. I had at least grabbed 2 garbage bags before heading out the door. 2! I pulled out one full garbage bag of trash. Yes I clean my car. About once every other week. But anything I wanted to keep, but was too lazy to take up to the apartment just got put in the trunk. So I had one full garbage bag of things I wanted to keep. Also jumper cables (which I insisted I needed when I got my first car but have never had to use on my own car), windshield wiper fluid, laundry soap, dryer sheets (oh yeah, my washer and dryer are broken too and I have to use a laundromat), 2 toy rakes, a toy broom, a box of shoes, and a Kitchen Aid mixer. I think it was the mixer that made the salesman raise his eye brows.

My new car... is foreign, not red, a standard, has a good radio, intermittent wipers, power locks, power windows, and 4 doors. And I love it!!! Might not so much once I have to start making those payments.

With this ring...

My weight loss continues to steadily drop. It is wonderful to go from the dreaded feeling before I step on the scale to elation when the numbers settle every morning. And it is beginning to show.

One day last week I was getting ready for work and Ladybug was following me around like a magnet. I was trying to answer her while remembering everything that needed to get done as I got ready for work. I use to be good at multi-tasking. Now I need lists.

I wear 4 rings every day - pinky and ring finger of each hand. On the left hand I where 2 tanzanite rings. On my right hand I wear a garnet ring and a sapphire ring. When I was a smaller person I wore the tanzanite rings on my right hand and I wore the other 2 rings on my left hand (middle finger and ring finger). My left hand is fatter because I am right handed. As I have gained weight I have had to adjust my accessories. I could have just stopped wearing them but ... well... I didn't want to. I love tanzanite and the other 2 rings I inherited when my grandmother died.

So I was getting ready last week, grabbed my rings and put them on. It was when I got into the car that I looked down at my hands and realized that I had put my rings on the wrong hands. YIPPEEEE!!!! I have lost enough weight so that my rings are fitting better. Okay, I wish that I would lose weight in my thighs first but I guess I can be happy with skinny fingers.

When I got home from work I took off my rings. Or more accurately...I tried to take off my rings. Three of them came off. The one on my right hand, ring finger would not budge. There was no way it was going to slip over that first knuckle. So I took it as a sign. A motivator. The only way that ring was coming off was if I lost more weight. Hey we all need a reason some days.

By day 2 of wearing that ring it was starting to get a little uncomfortable. It was leaving a ring around my finger. And the finger seemed a little more red then the others. Or was I imagining. But it went on so it had to come off. Right?

On the morning of day 3 I woke up and discovered that the finger was tingling. My skinny fingers must be gaining weight. I held my hand up in the air -- so glad that I am single as I laid in bed with my hand stuck straight up in the air. Did I really assume that gravity would make all the blood rush from my finger? Well, I hoped. It didn't.

I crawled out of bed -- something I hate doing on a Saturday morning at 6am. I ran my hand under cold water. I tugged. I pulled. My finger turned bright red. I got an ice cube and rubbed my finger with it. Does cold make things expand or contract? I can't remember. But don't you ice a sprain? Is that for the pain or the swelling? I tugged. I pulled. Still nothing.

I went into Ladybug's room. Yep, she was awake. I have to drag her butt out of bed on week days but she is up and happily playing with her barbies on a Saturday at 6am. Should I ask how long she has been up? Nah. She has no concept of time yet. I grab her lotion. She has this wonderful, fabulous, and fantastic lotion. It smells yummy. Yes, YUMMY! Some days I have to remind myself that it is not food and probably tastes terrible. But it smells good enough to eat.

I slather the lotion on my finger. I tugged. I pull. And it slowly inches over my knuckle. Don't stop pulling!! It popped off. Oh thank you! Now my images of my finger turning black and falling off before I can lose enough weigh can stop.

The good news is that I continue to lose weight. As of this morning I am officially down 19.8 pounds. Obviously that is not enough for my rings...and I have so much more to get rid of... but that is fantastic! Started diet April 22nd. Took a 4 day interruption. May 24th down 19.8 pounds. I can't wait until I get rid of another 20 pounds.

Reasons for buying a new car

I went car shopping yesterday. I did one dealership while Ladybug was in school. Found a few possibilities. Then I picked up a grumpy Ladybug and we hit a second dealership. Luckily her mood improved.

She would like me to buy the Toyota Yaris. Why???

She likes the cup holders.

The car...again...part II

So the rest of the story with my car...

I arrived home with groceries from the Sunday car adventure with the help of a wonderful friend. I was grateful that I had not bought ice cream because it was hot outside. And the rest of the groceries survived too. But I had a problem. My car was now in the northern part of D-town at my trusted mechanic. The one I used when I lived in northern D-town. But now I live in the southern part of D-town. My car is 12 miles from me. I need to figure out how to get to my car.

Now I have to figure out how to get to my car on Monday so I spent the evening on the internet looking at the local bus route. I trip into the past. I did not get my license until I was about 25 years old. I took the bus and walk everywhere. I knew it without looking at a schedule. But i didn't live in this town then. So I needed to figure it all out again. After about 30 minutes of looking I have determined that it will take about 2 hours to travel those 12 miles. Twelve miles in 2 hours with Ladybug. I am so spoiled having a car. But what choice do I have.

I wake up in the morning. Call in to work and explain the situation. And look out the window. It is pouring. And my my umbrella is in the car. You know, the car that is 12 miles away. I am not dragging Ladybug through the rain. I am not. All my locals friends are at work. My mom is 700 miles away. So I decide to rent a car...afterall, they will pick me up. Rent a car, check on my car, drop Ladybug at school, and go to work. I only arrived 3 hours late. Had to be done because I have deadlines and angry clients and courts don't care what is going on in my personal life.

Please let it be under $200. It is probably the starter. They tested the alternator the last time it was in the shop. It has to be the starter. Finally, the mechanic calls and tells me the car can be picked up.

Me: What was wrong with it?
Mechanic: Battery was installed incorrectly.
Me: (crickets....I can't even wrap my mind around it)
Mechanic: Hello?
Me: The battery?
Mechanic: Yes.
Me: How much?
Mechanic: $10.

$10!!! The battery was installed incorrectly??? How does that happen?

Pick up Ladybug. Stop at the mechanic and pay. Drop the rental off. Pick up car. Go home. What a day!

And then I got angry. $27 for the tow. $10 to fix the battery. $61 for a rental car. $61!!! I got an economy car and had it for 7 hours. Yikes! All because someone screwed up. Someone I paid.

On Tuesday I collected all the receipts and went back into mechanic #1. I explain that if they had done the job right I would not have had to spend that money. They copy the receipts and say they must talk with corporate. I remind them that I have spent nearly $1300 in their shop in the past few months. I remain civil. I put on my sweet voice (I use to work at a hotline and as a police dispatcher -- I know how to change my voice to fit the situation).

So far they have agreed to pay for the tow and the mechanic bill. I am still waiting to hear about the rental car. Hope they understand that "Mean Mama" has been known to jump off the deep end right into psychoticville.
